Health and Education
:-
On the basis of the survey findings the PRASAR felt the immediate need of starting educational programmes, as it will be an empowering tool in the hands of these young citizens. This will enhance their capacity to develop skill and bargaining power when they will grow up. Hence, on the basis of the survey findings and with the participation of the workers’ community, the PRASAR intended to start a few non-formal education centers (NFECs) and balbadis. For the want of financial assistance, these could not be started immediately.
To make the rights accessible, PRASAR is working on right to education and in that endeavor working on possible issues concerning to education. The main objectives are:
- To stop the closing down permanently govt. schools and demand for open new govt. school where need and as per govt. norms
- Ad hock teachers must be got permanent in service. Student- teacher’s ratio as per standard norms.
- To improve the mid day meal (MDM) quality.
- To provide the books on appropriate time i.e. at the time of admission.
- To ensure admission must be provided in neighborhood school.
- To provide the compulsory appliances in proper way as school building, water, desks, light and toilet facilities.
In 2001 PRASAR conducted a survey in Lalkuan (Delhi) in order to find out the people affected from silicosis. (Silicosis is the medical name of a lung disease caused by long term inhalation of invisible dust containing silica particles.)
PDF(Handbook on silicosis),
PDF(Leaflet on silicosis) The identification of the people was done mainly on the basis of our own understanding over the subject matter. In general and in this case too, to find out the occupational disease, the following three steps Occupational History, Symptoms and Clinical Examination are required. Therefore, in this case, PRASAR have followed the same method of identification by considering the occupational pattern in the past years as well as symptoms. Since PRASAR have not conducted the clinical examination (Radiology), therefore we recommend for the x-ray of the workers and further diagnosis. Though, in some cases x-ray was available, but majority of the workers had no x-rays.
